Best In Show

Yes, the humour is gentle and yes the plot meanders but this is still top notch observational character comedy, anyone who's seen the taxisdermy documentary Stuff The World will be struck by the similarity in the depictions of strange obsessive worlds.

In my book it's the equal of Spinal Tap and A Mighty Wind.

I'm sorry to say this, but I just find it far too gentle. It's like the kind of sluggish fare you'd expect to see on Sunday afternoon TV. For me, this is an occasional chuckle rather than an outright laugh (as Spinal Tap remains). I haven't seen A Mighty Wind - is it good?

If you didn't like this i think you may not like Mighty Wind that much either. It's quite similar in tone. Though to be honest in spite of the rock band theme I've always though Spional Tap was a similar kind of gentle and affectionate humour.

Affectionate, yes, but also with actually funny situations for the characters to interact with. Gay men with tiny dogs? Hilarious! It just seems like Christopher Guest has lost some of his zing.

That said, I would still happily watch A Mighty Wind.

Oh, and I did see Stuff The World on TV (which I enjoyed). I think the major difference is that when it's real people who have these obsessions and foibles, it truly can be touching/funny/pathetic/irritating. Because they create the drama by being themselves and reacting. You can relate to them better because they're not caricatures or stereotypes (I say this, despite the lone wolf taxidermist who seemed rather disturbed) - at least, not intentionally.

I prefer this to A Mighty Wind.

Gentle is nice.
